Starbucks plans to open at least 100 stores a year in China, aiming to build on early successes in a market the coffee chain expects will eventually rival its domestic US market in scale.

Starbucks is also tightening control over its China franchise. It said yesterday it had bought out the controlling shareholders in the company that operates 62 outlets in Beijing and Tianjin.
